Understanding PTSD

What is PTSD — and how does it differ from normal trauma responses?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that may develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. While many adults experience trauma at some point in life, only some develop persistent symptoms that interfere with daily functioning, relationships, sleep, or emotional well-being.

Traumatic experiences associated with PTSD may include combat or military service, physical or sexual assault, serious accidents, childhood abuse or neglect, medical trauma, natural disasters, or witnessing violence or injury. PTSD is not a sign of weakness — it is a recognized psychiatric condition with effective treatment options.

PTSD commonly occurs alongside depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disturbance, and substance use concerns. A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation helps clarify all contributing symptoms and supports appropriate treatment planning.

Our Approach

How we treat PTSD at Clear Path Psychiatry.

Trauma-focused psychotherapy—including CPT, EMDR, and PE—is recommended over medication as primary PTSD treatment. Clear Path provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management and coordinates psychotherapy referrals when appropriate.

Trauma-Informed Evaluation

A 60-minute psychiatric assessment of symptoms, trauma history at a tolerable pace, safety, sleep, medical and psychiatric history, substance use, functioning, prior treatment, and goals.

Medication Management

When medication is preferred or clinically appropriate, options are selected according to symptoms, co-occurring conditions, medical history, risks, prior response, and patient preferences.

Ongoing Follow-Up

Regular appointments to monitor symptom improvement, sleep, emotional regulation, medication response, and functioning — adjusted over time as your recovery progresses.

Care Coordination

Because trauma-focused psychotherapy is the preferred primary treatment, referral options for CPT, EMDR, or PE can be discussed and care coordinated when appropriate. Care coordination →

"Trauma-informed care isn't just a phrase — it means taking the time to understand what happened to someone, not just what symptoms they have. PTSD often looks like depression, anxiety, or mood instability on the surface. A careful evaluation that considers the full history makes a real difference in treatment planning."

What is the difference between PTSD and acute stress disorder? +

Acute stress disorder occurs from three days through one month after trauma. PTSD may be diagnosed when the required symptoms persist for more than one month and meet the other diagnostic criteria. Evaluation determines the appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Does medication cure PTSD? +

Medication does not cure PTSD. It may reduce symptoms for some people and may also address co-occurring depression or anxiety. Trauma-focused psychotherapies such as CPT, EMDR, and PE are recommended over medication as primary PTSD treatment; medication remains an option when therapy is unavailable, not feasible, or not preferred.

What medications are used to treat PTSD? +

When medication is selected, guideline-supported options may include sertraline, paroxetine, or venlafaxine. Prazosin may be considered specifically for PTSD-associated nightmares. Selection depends on symptoms, medical history, risks, other medications, prior response, and preferences; medication is not a substitute for trauma-focused psychotherapy.
