Understanding PTSD What is PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that may develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. While many adults experience trauma at some point in life, only some develop persistent symptoms that interfere with daily functioning, relationships, sleep, or emotional well-being. Traumatic experiences associated with PTSD may include combat or military service, physical or sexual assault, serious accidents, childhood abuse or neglect, medical trauma, natural disasters, or witnessing violence or injury. PTSD commonly occurs alongside depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disturbance, or substance use concerns. A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation helps clarify symptoms and support appropriate treatment planning. Source: National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)

PTSD is treatable. Many people experience meaningful improvement in symptoms, emotional well-being, sleep, relationships, and daily functioning with appropriate psychiatric care and ongoing support.

The Role of Medication Medication as part of PTSD treatment Medication may be one component of PTSD treatment, particularly when symptoms significantly affect sleep, emotional regulation, concentration, anxiety, or daily functioning. For many individuals, medication works best alongside trauma-focused psychotherapy and ongoing psychiatric follow-up care.
Medications may help with:
Reducing intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, and avoidance
Treating co-occurring depression and anxiety
Improving sleep and reducing trauma-related nightmares
Helping individuals engage more effectively in therapy
Supporting emotional stabilization during periods of significant distress

Combined treatment is often most effective

Many individuals with PTSD benefit from a combination of psychiatric medication management and trauma-focused psychotherapy. When appropriate, referrals can be coordinated through our care coordination services to support ongoing treatment and continuity of care.

Our Approach How we treat PTSD at Clear Path Psychiatry PTSD care works best when a patient feels safe enough to be honest. That starts with consistency — the same provider at every visit, who already knows your history and doesn’t need to be caught up. Care is individualized and trauma-informed, with attention to co-occurring conditions like depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and substance use concerns that often accompany trauma.

Thorough Psychiatric Evaluation

A detailed assessment to clarify PTSD symptoms, identify co-occurring conditions, and understand your overall clinical picture before treatment recommendations are made.

Medication Management

Medication options may include antidepressant medications commonly used to help reduce PTSD symptoms, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and emotional reactivity. Treatment recommendations are individualized based on symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals.

Ongoing Medication Monitoring

Regular follow-up appointments help monitor progress, manage side effects, assess symptom changes, and make thoughtful treatment adjustments over time.

Therapy Referrals & Care Coordination

When trauma-focused psychotherapy is appropriate, referrals can be coordinated with qualified therapists through our care coordination services to support continuity of care.

Common Questions Frequently asked questions about PTSD treatment
Do I need to describe the traumatic event in detail?
You will not be required to describe traumatic events in detail during psychiatric medication management appointments. The focus is on understanding your current symptoms, level of distress, and treatment needs. If trauma-focused psychotherapy would be helpful, referrals can be coordinated through our care coordination services.
How long does PTSD treatment take?
Treatment timelines vary depending on symptom severity, co-occurring conditions, and the type of treatment being used. Some individuals notice improvement relatively early, while others benefit from longer-term treatment and follow-up care.
Will medication alone treat my PTSD?
For many individuals, treatment works best when medication management is combined with trauma-focused psychotherapy. Medication may help reduce symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disturbance, hyperarousal, or depression, while therapy addresses the underlying trauma response. Referrals to trauma-focused therapists can be coordinated through our care coordination services.
I'm a veteran with PTSD. Can you help me?
Yes. Clear Path Psychiatry provides PTSD treatment for veterans and active-duty service members. TRICARE is accepted, and care can be coordinated alongside VA services when appropriate. Telepsychiatry appointments are available statewide in Minnesota.
What if I have PTSD along with depression or anxiety?
PTSD commonly occurs alongside conditions such as depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, or substance use concerns. Psychiatric evaluation helps clarify how symptoms may overlap so treatment can address the full clinical picture.
