Understanding PTSD What is PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that develops in some people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. About half of all U.S. adults will experience at least one traumatic event in their lives — but most do not develop PTSD. Traumatic events that may lead to PTSD include combat or military service, physical or sexual assault, serious accidents, natural disasters, witnessing violence, and childhood abuse or neglect. An estimated 3.6% of U.S. adults experience PTSD in a given year. PTSD often occurs alongside depression and anxiety disorders. Accurate diagnosis is essential. PTSD is treatable. With proper evaluation and care, most people with PTSD can recover and regain control of their lives. Early treatment leads to better outcomes.

The Role of Medication Medication as part of PTSD treatment According to the NIMH, medication can be an important component of PTSD treatment — especially when combined with trauma-focused psychotherapy.
Medications can help with:
Reducing intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, and avoidance
Treating co-occurring depression and anxiety
Improving sleep and reducing nightmares
Helping you engage more effectively in therapy
Reducing the risk of self-harm in those with severe symptoms

Combined treatment is often most effective

Common Questions Frequently asked questions about PTSD treatment
Do I need to describe the traumatic event in detail?
In medication management appointments, you won't be required to recount traumatic events in detail. We'll focus on your current symptoms and how best to treat them. If trauma-focused therapy is appropriate, we can provide referrals through our care coordination services.
How long does PTSD treatment take?
Treatment timelines vary by individual. Some people notice improvement within 6–8 weeks of starting medication, while others may need several months. Regular follow-ups help us monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed. See our new patients page for what to expect.
Will medication alone treat my PTSD?
Research shows that combining medication with trauma-focused psychotherapy is often most effective. Medication can reduce symptoms and help you engage in therapy more effectively. We can provide referrals to qualified trauma therapists through our care coordination services.
I'm a veteran with PTSD. Can you help me?
Yes. Clear Path Psychiatry has experience treating veterans and active-duty service members. We accept TRICARE and can work alongside your VA care. Our telepsychiatry services make it easy to access care from anywhere in Minnesota.
What if I have PTSD along with depression or anxiety?
Many people with PTSD also experience depression, anxiety, or substance use issues. We specialize in treating co-occurring conditions and develop a comprehensive plan that addresses all aspects of your mental health.
